What to Expect at a New Patient Exam

When you come for a new patient examination, we begin by asking, "Why have you chosen to come to our office?" It is important for us to understand your decision-- is it a health issue, a functional concern, a cosmetic issue, a similar philosophy, your family member or friend insisted, or your physician sent you. This guides us to address your needs in the process of doing a thorough examination.

Thorough New Patient Exam:

We preform a thorough oral exam that takes about two hours. We begin by gathering information- this includes a full set of digital ex-rays and assessing what currently exists in your mouth. We also provide an evaluation of your temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) (your jaw) to check if it may be causing you pain or headaches. We take intraoral photographs and conduct an oral cancer screening. Then we review of your health history and dental history including what medications and supplements you are taking, any allergies or sensitivities, what difficulties you have experienced in the past, and a nutritional evaluation.

Treatment Plan:

After reviewing your case, Dr Rosenbaum or Dr Gilson will design a treatment plan specifically for you. Depending on the state of health in your mouth, treatment plans may include various steps in a process designed to restore optimal functionality and health to your teeth, gums and oral microbiome. In some cases, the next step may require medical clearance, consultation with a specialist or additional imaging such as a cone beam x-ray.
